Happy Saturday! It’s been a busy week over here, so I was so excited to snuggle up and watch The Idea of You on Amazon Prime last night.
For context, I absolutely devoured the book a few years ago. Honestly, I think it might have been my first “smutty” book I ever read 😂 But besides blushing at all of the spicy scenes, I thought the writing and the story were so captivating. I loved how it challenged my point of view on age gaps… it’s too weird… but is it? Why do we judge when older women date younger men but don’t bat an eye at Leo and Bradley?
Without spoiling anything, the book was more of a crushing romance than a rom com to me, so when I saw this casting and trailer, I was a little nervous. But I really enjoyed it!
Anne Hathaway is not who I pictured originally, but she was an absolutely gorgeous Solene. Beautifully acted and well, just beautiful in general. And not only did Nicholas pleasantly surprise me as Hayes, but their chemistry was most definitely there. Ooooo!
I wish they had more time to explore the struggle between their feelings and the pressures of the outside world, her responsibilities as a Mom, and just how different their realities were. Someone messaged me that this would have made a great mini series… but the more I think about it, I’m torn!
Books are generally always better than the movies. And that’s because you spend so much more time with the characters. Instead of a quick 2 hour movie, you have 386 pages to hear their innermost thoughts and feelings.
But I appreciate that this movie managed to be a sweet rom com, while still holding on to emotional depth, societal commentary, and making us believe that they truly fell in love.
I don’t want to say more because I don’t want to spoil anything - but overall, I thought it was great! Have you watched it yet? What did you think?
Mother’s Day Gifts
Anything from the Our Place Sale - My mom specifically loves this nontoxic nonstick oven pan which is a perfect gift, especially if she’s been using the same cookie sheets for the past 1 million years.
Tommy John or Lake Pajamas - These 2 brands make my favorite pajamas, and Tommy John makes my favorite bras and underwear too. You can’t go wrong with either!
Maya Fragrances - These perfumes are so fresh and perfect for everyday. Maya Base is my favorite but I just got No.2 which is great for date night!
Dana Rebecca Necklace - If you want to splurge, Dana Rebecca is a Chicago designer that makes gorgeous jewelry.
Brightland Olive Oil & Vinegar Sets - High quality olive oil and vinegar might feel really extra, but honestly, that’s what makes it a great gift!
Amazon Mother’s Day Picks - I rounded up some other more options that will arrive quickly!
When in doubt, get her an experience! A night to herself, a spa appointment (mention me at Lapiel for a discount on gift cards!), dinner at a restaurant she’s been dying to try… anything that makes her feel special!
Weekend Links:
I got this Lululemon Align Dress last year and I just saw that they added a new version this year! These dresses are the best because the shorts are only attached in the front, so you can pull the back down instead of taking the whole dress off when you go to the bathroom. So convenient! (Full outfit here)
This piece by Liz Plank very eloquently articulates what so much of us are feeling regarding the un-conviction of Harvey Weinstein.
Alice & Wonder launched new Chicago items for summer and I’m having a hard time narrowing down what to get since it’s all 15% off this weekend!
Are there any fellow Syracuse alums out there? This sweatshirt is so cute!
Did you see that Sezane’s Positano collection launches tomorrow?! Swoon!
Hill House’s summer collection is also SO GOOD. Even if you aren’t a fan of their original nap dress, this collection has so many other beautiful pieces. I’m still trying to narrow down what to get!
PS. Did you read April Recommendations earlier this week?
