Girl Talk: Do you have a personal style?
plus the last weekend to get skincare and makeup on sale, new maggie rogers, and more!
As you might have picked up via social media, I am deep into the Magnolia Parks universe right now. I’ll dive more into this another time, but the short story is that I wasn’t sure about the first book, I gobbled up the second book, and now I’m almost done with the third with the fourth and fifth locked and loaded on my kindle. I am officially addicted.
But instead of talking about the books themselves, I want to focus on Magnolia’s style today.
For context, Magnolia is an ulta-rich socialite in London… so in no world would we ever dress the same. But she has such a solid sense of personal style that it’s made me think about my own. What is it? How would I describe it?
I started Lake Shore Lady almost 12 years ago now, and sometimes I forget just how long that is. Of course putting outfits together feels different now - I was 25 when I started documenting my looks and I’m almost 37 now!
Trends have changed, my body has changed, but most importantly, my needs have changed. Late night bars have been traded for sensible happy hours at a brewery. Work days are from home. Quality, versatility, and longevity have become more important.
Which then leads me to basics… but do you ever see an outfit and think to yourself: is that stylish or does she just look like Hailey Bieber? 😂
Being 5’2” with short legs and curves, some of those basic looks just don’t translate the same way on me. Pairing loose pants with an oversized top and sneakers? I wouldn’t look cool… I’d look like a mess!
It’s so easy to get caught up in trends, but it’s important to remember that your personal style doesn’t have to be the newest or most exciting. It can just be what you like to wear.
My job sometimes makes me think that I need to keep up with the “new haul every week” type influencers. But, while I want to give myself room to try new things, I also think that a lot of you are exactly like me. You’re looking for quality pieces that you’ll either wear all the time or that really spark joy for you. And I like being able to represent that type of person!
So if Magnolia Parks were to judge my closet and ask me what my personal style is, I think I would say that it’s comfortable and practical with a dash of feminine and flirty. I want to rewear the same jeans and basic sweaters for years, while dabbling with flirty blouses, feminine dresses and fun prints/bold colors.
How would you describe your personal style?

My heart sunk when I heard about this abortion ban in Arizona. The ripple effect it could have on pregnancy care for all women is really scary.
I usually say “you don’t have to get me anything” when my parents ask me what I want for my birthday, but I sent this new Our Place pan to my mom as soon as I saw it. It sounds amaaazing.
This active dress is giving me major Meredith Blake vibes.
The most recent episode of Giggly Squad had me giggling out loud on my walk in the park. Those two crack me up.
You can use code LAKESHORE for 25% off my favorite hydration packets right now! All of the flavors are so good, they have 0 sugar and there’s Vitamin D in there too :)
